Biography

Dino was born is Surinam (South America) as the youngest son of five children. He came to Holland when he was 15 years old. He  started to play guitar and mouthharp at the age of 13. His first mentor was a friend called Lesley Leeflang now member of the well-known group ‘Trafassi’. Lesley tought him the first chords on guitar and his interest in music grew and one year later he started his own band.

As a young guy he played with several bands and during his years at school he played in a group called the Holy Spirit (nothing holy in this band, they did all this unholy stuff) played blues and rock for clubs and Highschool party’s. One day he got a call from a cabaretgroup because they needed a guitarplayer. After a few days they agreed with him to play the bass, since they already had a pianoplayer. So he picked up the bass and began to like it.

When Dino studied at the Conservatory in The Hague a teacher told him he had no talent so he had to quitte. One evening at a gig a producer who liked his playing asked him if he would like to finish the recordings of an album they where doing. The producer also wanted him to overdub the previous recorded basstracks. As Dino asked him who actually did the basstracks, the producer suprisingly called the name of his ex-teacher at the Conservatoire. So don’t let no one stop you, just follow your heart.

In the early eighties he formed the Jazzrock group ‘Dino and friends’. Dino Walcott bass, Lloyd Bra Tjon drums, Michael Samson guitar and Willy Latino keyoards. With this formation he drew the attention of some well-known artists who also liked to perform with the band. Dino and Friends existed for several years and after the group split-up he started to work as a sessionplayer.

Dino recorded, did television, sessions and toured all over Europe with performers like guitarplayer Jan Akkerman, bluessinger/guitarplayer Sherman Robertson (Clifton Chenier and Paul Simon) blueslegend Big Jack Johnson, singer Van Morrison, singer Kaz Lux (Brainbox), guitarplayer Ad van de Berg (White Snake), trumpet player Philip Harper (Harper Brother and Art Blakey), drummer Killer Ray Appleton (John Coltrane and Wes Montgomery), Darryl Jones (The Rolling Stones, Miles Davis, Sting and Andy Summer) pianoplayer Rob van de Broek, singer Wendell Richardson (Osibisa), Alphonso Johnson (Weather Report, George Duke and Quincy Jones), Curtis Knight (Jimmy Hendrix) and Keith Dunn.

Dino’s first solo album Mind Traveller titled ‘On the Move’ was produced by Alphonso Johnson and contains music with  timeless songs like ‘Trying again’, The fugitive’and ‘Tukayana’. He is still arranging and recording with several artists and writes songs/lyrics in his studio Room of Mirrors.
